Tanning Useful Tips To Prevent Skin Damage

tanning process

Tanned skin was not always the desired look as it is now. During the Renaissance and earlier, tanned skin was the mark of a laborer who spent his or her days outside working. The nobility always had pale skin. Now the stereotypes are reversed. Today, the activity of tanning, either indoor tanning or beach tanning, and having a golden glow is a mark of healthiness and prosperity. Men and women tan their bodies in sun tanning booths to have that golden skin, but it comes with a price. It may be a price that is too high.

The human body needs to have sunlight to survive. However, these days the sun is quite damaging to our bodies if exposed for lengthy periods of time. As sunlight beams down, surface cells begin to die. The longer we are in the sun the more damage occurs. That is why you will burn in the sun if you go out without wearing sunscreen. Doctors estimate that one in five people will develop skin cancer sometime in their lives. Tanning doubles that risk.

There are ways to look tanned and golden without damaging your skin in the process. You can have fake tans that look like the real thing. That golden designer skin can be yours with some self tanning lotion. It is easy to apply if you know what you are doing. Most people make the mistake of trying to apply the lotion to dry skin. Fake tans are notorious for streaking and this is why it happens. If you want an even application, then you need to start with freshly exfoliated skin straight from the shower. Dry your body and then apply regular moisturizer. This will eliminate any dry areas that could become too dark during the do-it-yourself tanning process.

The next step for your designer skin is to apply the self tanner in small amounts and work the lotion into your skin. Make sure and go over your elbows and knees very lightly. You will also want to make sure that you wash the tanning skin cream off of your palms. It is that easy. If you find that your self tanning lotion is still streaking, then you may want to consider going with the new spray tanners that coat your body with a fine mist. Those are usually easier to use and are inexpensive. You can also consider buying the new lotions that have a gradual tanner. It will take several applications to see a soft glow, but you will also have nice soft skin as an added benefit.
